According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), agriculture causes 90% of global deforestation. Thankfully, there’s hope through sustainable farming methods that SHI farmers practice in Central America. These methods replant degraded forests and protect tropical forests still intact.
When farmers first join SHI’s program, they commit to a multi-year, hands-on learning experience that is guided by SHI Field Trainers and rooted in sustainable agriculture. Our program takes time because we believe in long-term results. When farming families have successfully completed the program, they're invited to take part in a community graduation ceremony.
