Who am I?
My name is Maria Fernanda Romero Rubiano. I´m 21 years old and I´m from Colombia. I was born in the big city and capital of my country, Bogota, although I grew up in a rural community called Tabio.
Tabio is a traditional and small town, nestled in the mountains surrounding Bogota. Tabio has a deep farming tradition, but also has its own artistic and gastronomic cultures. Tabio keeps fighting to preserve its deep roots, but non-sustainable mining disguised as progress threatens its existence. Inequality and badly planned public policies are sending the landscape into poverty.
My own little town, at more than 2,500 meters above sea level, is warm because of its people—drinking hot coffee and eating arepas unites us in warm conversations. Tabio is dressed in purple when its potato fields are flowering. My people work hard, and lettuce, broccoli, and carrots cover the great soil that lives under our feet where our ancestors rest in peace. I grew up there; my history lies in that small town. It's my origin, that´s who I am.
¿Quién soy yo?
Mi nombre es María Fernanda Romero Rubiano, tengo 21 años y soy de nacionalidad colombiana. Aunque nací en la gran ciudad y capital del país, Bogotá, mi vida ha transcurrido en Tabio. Un pueblo tradicional y pequeño, perdido entre las montañas de la sabana de Bogotá, testigo de la labor agrícola y tradición gastronómica y artística. Un pueblito que lucha por mantenerse en pie, enfrentándose a la locomotora del progreso (la minería), a las políticas agrícolas desiguales, a una economía en donde el campo, la agricultura y el campesino son sinónimo de pobreza.
Un pueblo que a sus 2600 msnm calienta y abriga con la gentileza de su gente, un pueblo en donde el “tintico” con arepa se sirve caliente, donde las flores color purpura de la papa esbozan el trabajo duro y las lechugas, repollos, brócolis y zanahorias cobijan la tierra negra que descansa bajo pies de nuestros ancestros. En ese lugar crecí, en ese pueblo está mi historia, mi origen, mi yo.
What do you want for the future?
In the future and today, I want to walk through the world working hand-in-hand with people who have the greatest of richness: the richness that allows them to wake up and enjoy the sunrise while chickens run around their feet. I want to work with and for rural communities. I want to help people appreciate the place of the rural world on this earth. I want to work for food sovereignty while fighting gender inequalities. I want to work to stop land degradation, deforestation, and poverty.
Prior to leaving for Panama, Maria and her fellow interns met with last year's volunteers and Field Impact Officer Ricardo Romero to prepare.
¿Qué quiero en el futuro?
En el futuro tanto como en el presente quiero caminar por el mundo y colocarme hombro a hombro con las personas cuya riqueza es la mejor de todas, cuya riqueza les permite despertar cada día y ver el sol por la ventana, mientras las gallinas les pican los pies. Quiero dedicarme a trabajar con y para las comunidades rurales, me gustaría reivindicar el lugar del campo, contribuir en el empoderamiento de la labor agrícola, trabajar para alcanzar la soberanía alimentaria dándole de frente a la desigualdad de género, falta de oportunidades, deforestación, a la contaminación y degradación de los recursos naturales, a la pobreza entre otros.
Why do you study at EARTH University?
I´m a beneficiary of the EARTH scholarship program. Without a scholarship, it would have been impossible for me to study to be who I am today. University has opened dozens of doors and opportunities—now I can choose where to go and what to do. I have learned skills to be a professional and find my destiny. I attend EARTH University because the school believes that when people carry out small actions, great change can happen. I study at EARTH University because EARTH University believed in me.
¿Por qué estudio en la Universidad EARTH?
Actualmente soy una de los muchos beneficiarios del programa de becas de la Universidad EARTH, sino hubiera adquirido una beca muy difícilmente estaría donde estoy. La Universidad me ha abierto las puertas a un mundo de oportunidades de las cuales puedo elegir, proporcionándome las herramientas básicas para poder ejercer mi profesión y encontrar mi vocación. Estoy en EARTH porque soñó en algún momento, al igual que yo que con pequeñas acciones se pueden lograr grandes cambios, estudio en EARTH, porque creyó en mí.
Why did you apply for an internship with us?
This internship is a great challenge and opportunity. I’ve wanted to work with Sustainable Harvest International since I first learned about it. I share the organization’s mission. However, the main factor behind my application was that they understand that without local community stewardship, natural conservation is impossible to achieve. The organization believes that we are all part of the same community: the community of people on Mother Earth.
I expect a lot of things from this internship—technical knowledge of course, but not just that. I want to learn about people, about what makes us human and what connects us. I want to learn how to better develop as a human being, and to learn so many things that I know I need to learn.
¿Por qué hacer una pasantía con SHI? ¿Qué espero de esta pasantía?
Realizar mi pasantía en una organización como SHI para mí es un gran reto y oportunidad. Desde el primer instante en el que supe de SHI quise ser parte de ello. Al investigar e indagar encontré que la organización se adaptaba a muchas de las cosas por las cuales sentía interés. Sin embargo, lo que más me atrapo era el hecho de que estaba consciente de que las comunidades son un factor fundamental en la preservación del medio ambiente y comunidad somos todos y todos somos parte de este planeta.
Espero en esta pasantía aprender, no solo aspectos técnicos, sino que también aspectos humanos, esos que nos hacen personas. Más que hacer una pasantía, ganar dinero, aprender a trabajar o ser profesional, espero construirme como persona, ser humana y ayudar, transferir lo que he aprendido hasta hoy y aprender y reaprender todo lo que me falta.
What do you dream of?
I dream of being happy doing what I love. I dream about waking up in the morning and looking up at the sky, or about drinking hot coffee with my neighbors and eating sweat corn arepas produced on our own plots. I dream about a more just and better rural world. I dream of rural people feeling proud of their role in the world.
¿Cuáles son sus sueños?
Sueño con ser feliz, haciendo lo que me gusta. Sueño con levantarme en la mañana mirar al cielo y saludar a mis vecinos mientras nos tomamos un tintico y preparamos las arepas con el maíz cosechado de los huertos propios. Sueño con un agro más justo, más humano, con un campo empoderado y con un campesino orgulloso de su oficio.
