Earth Mother - "Every time I've been in a rainforest, every single time, I'm awed at the diversity and the abundance of life," says Florence Reed, founder of Sustainable Harvest International. "That makes me very motivated to do whatever little piece I can to make sure that, when the sun comes up, it will still be there." Reed witnessed the destruction of Central American rainforests firsthand while working with the Peace Corps and other nonprofits. She also saw the devastating effect of slash-and-burn agriculture (clearing the land, subsisting on what little will grow until the land is depleted, and then moving on to repeat the cycle elsewhere) on the farmers and their families. This experience affected her deeply, and in May 1997 she founded the nonprofit Sustainable Harvest International (SHI).

Founder Flo Reed receives the "2007 Classic Woman Award" from Traditional Home Magazine - A sense of urgency drives Florence Reed. By some estimates, an acre of the rain forest she has dedicated her life to preserving is lost every second. Florence came to love nature early, hiking and camping as she grew up in the Northeast. She joined the Peace Corps immediately after college and was stationed in Central America. What she saw there-a destructive cycle of traditional slash-and-burn farming in which ash is used as fertilizer but soon washes away, degrading the earth-led her to found Sustainable Harvest International (SHI).
