Cacao (what is used to make chocolate) is a valuable cash-crop that can be grown in plots that mimic the natural forest. Build a Wood-Conserving Stove - $50
Wood-conserving stoves save thousands of trees and greatly improve women's and children's health in Central America. These stoves require a fraction of the amount of firewood of an open fireplace and reduce toxic smoke in the home. Your Gift of Hope provides a family with a chimney, grate and training to build these stoves out of mostly local materials. As one recent stove recipient in Honduras said, "This stove has changed my life. I don't have to spend hours collecting firewood. I only need to use little sticks and the smoke goes up the chimney, not in my eyes and lungs."

Help a Woman Start Her Own Business - $75
Provide a woman with the startup funding, training and support to start her own business. These loans enable women to take control of their futures. As one loan recipient said, "With the money we earn we support our families and buy more materials to put into our business. Our goal is to prosper and we hope to improve what we are able to provide for our children." Businesses include bakeries, sewing cooperatives, small stores, traditional hand crafts and growing and selling spices.

Establish a Village School Program - $100
SHI's school programs provide students, teachers and communities with training to grow nutritious food while restoring the environment. SHI's local field trainers teach in the classroom and work with students and educators to plant trees and vegetable gardens.

Biogas digesters convert manure and other organic "waste" into methane gas that can be used for cooking. This Gift of Hope not only reduces deforestation, but improves family health by replacing fire pits which fill homes with toxic smoke.

SHI's Rural Loan Funds provide families with training and financial support to break out of the cycle of poverty and deforestation in their communities. This Gift of Hope provides families with the training and seed capital to start a rural bank, which community members match and manage. Save 200 Acres of Tropical Forest - $600
Tropical forests protect soils, mitigate global warming and provide a home for wildlife. SHI is having great success at saving acres of tropical forest by providing farming families with the training and the tools they need to adopt sustainable alternatives to destructive slash-and-burn farming practices. To date, SHI participants have planted more than 2 million trees, converted thousands of acres of land to sustainable uses, thereby saving tens of thousands of acres of forest from being destroyed.
